rated The auctioneer will accept an advance of 1 cent up to oUc., then 5c.
up to $2.50, when lOc. advance must be bid, up to $10, when no advance
under 25 cents will be accepted. You can bid anything up to 50c., after
that the bid must be 55c., or 00c. Such offers as 51c., $1.01, etc., are
unavailable.
Auction sales are strictly for cash. Parties unknown to me and bidding
for the first time, nnrst give bank or other reliable reference.
Forward your bids as early as possible, as thousands of bids have to be
entered. Do not make ridiculously low bids, such as 10 and 15c. on foreign
siU'er coins worth several times over as bullion. Write your bids plainly,
with a pen if practicable. I have taken special pains to carefullj’ and fairly
de.scribe each lot.
Where the number of pieces in a lot is not given after the description,

RARE PATTERNS FOR U. S. PAPER MONEY.
581 Dec. 1, 1863. $100 Treasury Coupon note. With three cou-
pons attached, each for $21/2- On the left two male figures
representing Commerce and Industry; on the right, scene
on board a man-o-war in action, with large smooth-bore
cannon; in the two upper corners engine-turned ovals on
which are C overlapped by the figures 100. This was to be
issued December first 1863, with interest at 5 per cent, per
annum, payable semi-annually, and was to run for 2 years.
The last semi-annual interest to be redeemed with the note.
This is a beautiful specimen of the engravers’ art, with en-
graved sigs. of Chittenden and Spinner. Has small cancel
holes, but not in any way conspicuous. Note never regu-
larly issued, and excessively rare. Crisp.

center a finely engraved standing figure of Washington; to
the left a female figure emblematic of Liberty; to the right
a female figure representing Justice, holding balances. In
right and left upper corner, oval engine-turned labels on
which are the Arabic figures “100.” This was to be a 3
year interest note payable at rate of 6 per cent, per annum.
This note never appeared in circulation, and is rated as
one of the rarest of the United States pattern pieces of pa-
per money. So far as can be learned, there is only another
specimen. Slightly canceled, but in no way to disfigure the
design. Crisp.

America is the only notional banking institution which was

RARE PAPER MONEY.
20c paper note, C. A. Cook & Co., Denver, Colorado, Terri-
tory, (1861). (Unsigned). This is the only known speci-
men of a series of paper notes of small denominations
which were issued by the above named banking house at
Denver, in 1861, which represents the only paper money is-
sue of Colorado, with the exception of the $5 note of Clark
Gruber & Company. All of these notes, of which $2,000.00
worth were originally issued, in denominations of 15, 20,
,25, 50c and $1, all of which were made payable in gold dust
and redeemed in that metal. Uncirculated. This note was
lithographed by a firm in New York. On the left are two
female figures, one standing, the other seated. On the right
the representation of a little girl under whom is inscribed

a female liead to left, with tightly coiled hair; on a band
across the top of the head the word “Liberty”; around the
bordei' “L. PInrilms Unnm, 1879” and thirteen stars. On
the reverse, within a circle of stars, in four lines: “15. .3 —
H I 230.7 — S I 28 — C | 1-1 — Hrams” within a circle of stars.
Immediately around the (hrcle of stars, in semicir(*le at the
tojy “Holoid j\Ietric Dollar”. At the liottom in semi-cir-
cle the motto “ Deo Est Hloria.” Around the border “ Unit-
ed States of America, 100 Cents.” This is one of the rarest
of the goloid series of dollars, tlie head being of curious de-
sign, a good deal like that on the excessively rare stella by

Morgan dated 1879, with tightly coiled hair, and the resem-
blance would seem to indicate that the work was by the
same artist.
650a 1878. $1. Copper proof. On the obverse the regular ac-
cepted design of Morgan of 1878. On the reverse the same
as the adopted design, but the eagle holds a thick olive
branch with three leaves in its left talon, which materially
differs from the adopted design. This pattern is very rare
in silver, but is excessively so in copper, and it may not
have been offered before.
651 1879. ^1^1. Silver ])roof. Obverse same as adopted design
by Morgan, but on the reverse a design by Barber! Illus-
trating a rare instance in which the obverse and reverse
designs of two different engravers were used on a United
States coin. In the center of the reverse is an eagle with
outstretched wings, holding in its left talon an olive branch
with 9 leaves; the right talon grasps three long arrows;
just above the head of eagle, in small letters across the field
is the motto “E. Pluribus Unum”; around the border
“United States of America.” This coin is also remarka-
ble for the fact that it has the motto “E. Pluribus Unum”
on both obverse and reverse.
652 1882. Dollar. Silver proof. The celebrated “Morgan de-
sign.” Liberty head to right, with a band tightly stretch-
ed around the hair at the back, giving the effect of a skull-
cap, under which the hair loosely flows; in the ear in the
form of an ear-ring is a tiny United States shield; around
the border “E. Pluribus Unum, 1882,” with thirteen stars;
on the reverse in the field is a fine representation of an
eagle in an aggressive attitude, standing to right, holding
in its talons an olive leaf and three arrows; around the bor-
der “United States of America.” This is one of the hand-
somest of the United States pattern dollars, the beauty of
which makes one wonder why it was not adopted for reg-
ular circulation. Not over four of these known. This is
the first time in many years that it has been offered for sale
in silver. So far as can be learned the last time being in
the Doughty sale in the early ’90s. Slight scratch on obv.

left, in the center of the held, a head a good deal similar to
the regular Morgan adopted design of 1878; immediately
around the head a circle of dots; between this circle and
the border the inscri{)tion ‘‘F. Pluribus Unum, 1877,” with
thirteen stars. On the reverse, an odd looking eagle fac-
ing front with head turned to right, with fan-like wings,
its attitude suggesting “Phoenix rising from the tlames.”
It is excessi\ ely rare as are all of the {)atterns of this year.
1882. Nickel Five Cents. Proof. Design same as adopted
design of 1883, or “Nickel without Cents.” <A"ery rare.
1882. Five Cents. Copper proof. Same as foregoing, with
the difference in the metal. Also a great rarity.
1882. Five Cents Nickel. This design, obv. and rev., is
very similar to adopted design of 1883, but over the head
of “Liberty” instead of the usual stars is the motto “In
God We Trust” around the border. Proof. •• Very rare.
1883. Nickel five cents. Head of Libertv fo left, surround-
ed by inscription “United States of America, 1883.” On
the reverse, enclosed by a wreath is an inscrii>tion “75 N.,
25 C.” At the top the word “Pure”, and at- the bottom
“Nickel.” Proof. One of the rarest of the five cent piec-
es.
1883. Five Cents. Obverse and reverse simi^iar to the fore-
going, but in the center of the wreath, in two lines, the

There is one amulet with the head of an Indian. They are
all made of the same material, a grayish stone with polish-
ed surface. Very rare lot. Worth $100.00.
885 Chinese good luck charm, in the form of a coin sword. Hung
up in the room to scare away the evil spirits. Contains
about 150 cash coins.
886 German or Austrian paper weight in the form of a lot of
wooden envelopes, ornamented, ‘Hied” with a wooden
strap and buckle. Very odd.
